Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni Denounces Union Leader for ‘Trump Courtesan’ Comment
Giorgia Meloni has strongly condemned the head of the country’s biggest trade union after he described her as the “courtesan” of former US President Donald Trump.
Context of the Controversial Remarks
CGIL leader Maurizio Landini, leading Italy’s CGIL labor organization, issued the comment on a TV program this Tuesday. This came just after world leaders, including Meloni, convened for a peace conference for the Middle East in Egypt.
Landini claimed Meloni of “not having lifted a finger” to secure peace in Gaza, stating her participation was confined to “playing Trump’s courtesan”. “Fortunately, citizens of Italy took to the street to uphold the dignity and honour of this country,” he commented.
Official Reaction
Via an online post this Thursday, Meloni stated that the union chief was clearly blinded by a mounting resentment (that I comprehend)”. She proceeded to share a definition of the term “courtesan”.
“In my opinion most people are aware the primary definition given to this word, but, for the benefit of those who might not, I’m publishing the initial definition obtained from a quick internet search,” Meloni said, including a capture that read: “Woman of loose morals, straight; euphemism, escort.”
She further condemned her leftwing opponents, noting that over many years they had preached to us on women’s rights” only to then attack a woman by “referring to her as a prostitute”.
Landini’s Clarification
In response to the post, the union leader maintained that there were “no misogynistic remarks” toward the Prime Minister and that the term was meant to imply “an underling to Trump”.
In a statement, he explained: “During a brief interview, readily accessible to all, to clarify any confusion or misuse of the expression, I promptly explained the sense of my words – that Meloni was trailing behind Trump, she was at Trump’s court, she served as Trump’s underling.”
Meloni’s Relations with Trump
Meloni has steadily built cordial connections with the US president. During a speech at the Egypt summit, the US President addressed the Italian Prime Minister – the sole female at the event – and called her “beautiful”. “In the US, such a remark might be politically fatal,” he noted. “But I’ll take the risk. May I comment that you look beautiful? As you are indeed beautiful.”
The US president afterwards lauded Meloni as “an inspiration to all” in concerning the English version of her book, I Am Giorgia: My Roots, My Principles, which contains a introduction by Donald Trump Jr..
Previous Incidents
Earlier this year, the Prime Minister reacted strongly after learning that altered images of her and additional notable women from Italy had been uploaded to a pornographic website, stating she felt revulsion, and offering “unity and backing to the women who have been violated, insulted, and offended”.
